Blaine boys' soccer capsule

Coach: Giovanni Quesada

Last year: The Borderites finished the year 3-14 overall, and 1-11 in Northwest Conference play. ... Blaine lost to South Whidbey 6-0 in the opening round of the Class 1A Northwest District Tournament.

Players to watch: Nick Butschli (Sr., F); Garren Economy (Sr., M/F); Konner VanRijswick (Jr., M).

Outlook: New coach Giovanni Quesada is taking a compete-on-all-fronts mentality with this team, allowing for a constant flux of new players to get playing time at the varsity level. "I try to make a competitive team," Quesada said in a phone interview. "Trading halves opens the window for lots of kids." He does have a decent stock of senior leadership in Nick Butschli and Garren Economy. Butschli led the team with 13 goals, and Quesada believes he will build upon last season with another year of experience. "He has a lot of potential to score goals," Quesada said. "He's a natural leader and hard worker." On Economy: "Really, really smart player. He has a lot of foot skills. ... Really understands and reads the game."
