BELLINGHAM

RED RAIDERS

Coach: Matt Zigulis

Last year: The Red Raiders went 18-2-1 overall, finishing first in the Northwest Conference with an 11-0-1 record. ... Reached the Class 2A State Tournament, beating North Kitsap before losing to Ridgefield.

Players to watch: Noe Betancourt-Cruz (Jr., F/M); Lars Botterill (Sr., D); Logan Schilder (Jr., GK).

Outlook: The question entering the Red Raiders' 2014 season is how will coach Matt Zigulis find a way to make up for the seniors he lost in All-Whatcom County Player of the Year Auden Schilder, and fellow first-teamers Conlon Kiffney and Brad Dale. It's a question he thinks his team will answer just fine. "It's a new group, and lots of energy," Zigulis said in a phone interview. "We have a lot of experienced players, and we have a huge sophomore class. Everybody is going to step up." Noe Betancourt-Cruz largely lived in the shadow of Dale and Kiffney, but he was Bellingham's third-leading scorer last year. "He will fill in attacking-wise," Zigulis said. Replacing Schilder in goal will be his younger brother, 6-foot-7 Logan Schilder. "He had his older brother to mentor him. Couldn't have had a better role model," Zigulis said.
