LYNDEN

LIONS

Coach: Drew Smiley

Last year: The Lions finished fifth in the Northwest Conference with a 6-2-4 conference record. .... Lynden ended the year 7-3-6 overall, but it failed to earn a spot in the Class 2A Northwest District Tournament.

Players to watch: Hector Gutierrez (Jr., GK); Nicolas Parris (Fr., F); Alex Otano-Guenther (Sr., F).

Outlook: Simply put, Lynden coach Drew Smiley said, the Lions are young. There is a hitch to that, though, as Lynden is as quick a team as can be found in the Northwest Conference this year. "We have some decent speed. Definitely not a typical Lynden big, physical team," Smiley said in a phone interview. "I would think we're young, fit and fast. That's really the strength." Another strength Smiley made note of was his junior keeper, Hector Gutierrez. Gutierrez, a first-team All-Whatcom County selection last year, allowed just 1.25 goals per game, and leads a stout defensive backfield that looks to carry the Lions to the 2A playoffs.
