Sehome boys' soccer capsule

SEHOME

MARINERS

Coach: John Sylvester

Last year: The Mariners' 5-7-0 record in Northwest Conference play earned them an eighth-place finish, sixth amongst 2A schools. ... Sehome ended the season 7-8-1 overall. ... The Mariners did not advance to play in the postseason.

Players to watch: Sam Diehl (Sr., D); Shae Wirth (Sr., M/F); Zachary Wanne (Jr., M).

Outlook: Where Sehome is going to make its mark, or at very least give itself its best chance of winning, is on the defensive end. Sam Diehl returns after breaking his ankle last season to be one of the Mariners' strong defenders alongside Shae Wirth and the two-goalie tandem of sophomores Max Diehl and Devin Trueb. "Our defense looks stronger," Sehome coach John Sylvester said in a phone interview. "We have some of that core, plus we've added a couple guys, five or six strong guys on defense." Sylvester said he's going to rely on several pieces on offense to pressure teams, although leading the group will be senior forward Jesse Haggen, who scored four goals last season.
