Blaine softball capsule

Coach: Alisa Burk

Last year: The Borderites finished 16-9 overall last year, and 7-5 in Northwest Conference play. ... Under Burk, Blaine advanced to the Class 1A Northwest District Tournament where it went 3-1 to earn a spot in tri-districts. ... A victory over Bothel Cedar Park Christian was followed by a season-ending loss to Mount Baker in tri-districts.

Players to watch: Alexis McElwain (Sr., P/Utility); Selena Pai (Sr., OF); Lexi Greguski (Jr., C).

Outlook: Blaine is coming off a resurgent 2013 season, and apparently that mentality has transitioned well to this season. At least according to Blaine coach Alisa Burk. "This year we've worked harder than ever," Burk said in a phone interview, "harder than I've pushed them in the past. We look really strong." Leading the Borderites both in the circle and at the plate will be senior Alexis McElwain. "She's going to be an incredible leader for the team," Burk said of McElwain. "Just mentally she's going to be one of the ones who will carry us." Senior Selena Pai, who will be roaming center field, will help Blaine's pitching staff with her ability to cover lots of ground, while also providing a strong bat at the top of the Borderites' lineup. "I have 1 through 9 that can hit," Burk said.
