NOOKSACK VALLEY

PIONEERS

Coach: Tom Harmon

Last year: The Pioneers finished 16-10 overall last year, and 6-6 in Northwest Conference play. ... Nooksack Valley swept its four games in districts and tri-districts, advancing to the state championships where it went 1-2.

Players to watch: Chloe Gardner (Sr., IF/OF); Kayla Struiksma (Sr., P); Alexis Pike (So., IF/P).

Outlook: The pitching tandem of senior Kayla Struiksma and Alexis Pike baffled teams last year, both bringing a different dimension to the circle, and coach Tom Harmon expects much of the same this year. "(There's) no hesitation going to anybody," Harmon said in a phone interview. In terms of offense and senior leadership, Chloe Gardner, an All-Whatcom County first-team selection last year, will provide a punch in the middle of the lineup for Harmon. Melanie Brown, too, is a bat he will rely on as the year progresses. "We have seniors (who've) logged quite a bit of playing time the last three years," Harmon said. "I think they are a pretty good group as a unit, supporting each other and as a team. They all got a lot of varsity experience, but critical experience in crucial areas game-wise."
