Meridian softball capsule

Coach: Jordan Chambers

Last year: The Trojans finished 5-16 overall last year, and 3-9 in Northwest Conference play. ... They advanced to the Class 1A Northwest District Tournament, but lost to both Nooksack Valley and Coupeville in back-to-back games.

Players to watch: Kendra Holmes (Sr., SS); Emma Weg (So., P) Madeline Gray (So., Utility)

Outlook: It's Jordan Chambers' first year at the helm of the Meridian Trojans' softball program, and he's trying to change the culture there in a drastic way. "They went from hour and a half practices to three-hour practices," Chambers said in a phone interview. "They are responsible for cleaning the field. ... It's a completely different program." And while the team has a fresh approach, it's still going to rely heavily on youth for its production this season. Sophomores Emma Weg and Madeline Gray will make up the pitcher-catcher tandem, and freshman Bailey Carpenter's bat is going to be big for the Trojans' lineup. "She's just a beast all around," said Chambers of Carpenter. Senior shortstop and team captain Kendra Holmes is going to hit in the No. 3 hole, and Chambers is going to rely heavily on her for leadership throughout the season.
