Ferndale softball capsule

Coach: Holly Hilton

Last year: The Golden Eagles went 14-9 overall, and 9-3 in Northwest Conference play last season. ... Ferndale advanced to the Class 3A Northwest District Tournament before going 1-2, losing to Glacier Peak, defeating Oak Harbor and falling to Shorecrest.

Players to watch: Collette Brown (Sr., 1B); Kadence Kane (Jr., SS); Lauren Maley (Jr., P).

Outlook: Ferndale coach Holly Hilton has good reason to be optimistic about this year's club, having junior shortstop Kadence Kane and senior first baseman Collette Brown returning with another year under their belts. Kane put together a .456 batting average last year, driving in 27 RBI in the process. "All the kids have gotten a year older and a year stronger," Hilton said in a phone interview. With that said, though, Hilton noted that this team does have a fair amount of youth, especially with such a large freshman class that is untested. "I'm hoping some of them will be contributors," said Hilton of the freshman class.
