Nooksack Valley Pioneers prep baseball capsule

NOOKSACK VALLEY PIONEERS

Coach: Scott Gelwicks

Last year: Finished 11th in the Northwest Conference with a 3-9 record. ... Ended season after going 1-2 in the Class 1A Northwest District Tournament and finished 7-15 overall.

Players to watch: Eben Rossmiller (sr., C/2B); Curtis Handy (jr., C/P); Noah Rawls (so., P/SS); Dalton Biehle (jr., P/OF)

Outlook: Nooksack Valley has placed an emphasis on focus and hustle this preseason, and coach Scott Gelwicks is hoping that message can help the Pioneers add a few more wins this spring. "We have a lot of great chemistry going on right now," Gelwicks said. "Those kids are close and enjoy being on the field with each other and working hard." A myriad of Nooksack Valley underclassmen logged varsity innings last season, and that experience could manifest this spring. Headlining the club is Eben Rossmiller, who is one of three senior Pioneers. Rossmiller can catch and play middle infield and will be relied on to produce runs in the heart of the lineup. Although Gelwicks doesn't have his full pitching rotation hashed out, he believes Dalton Biehle, Curtis Handy and Noah Rawls will serve as the club's top three pitchers. "Those three will carry the load, and we have three or four more guys that will pick up a lot of innings." The Pioneers have plenty of athleticism. Junior outfielder Tanner Myhre has been the Pioneers starting QB the past two seasons, and junior second baseman and pitcher Taylor Gardner is a standout wrestler.
