Meridian Trojans prep baseball preview capsule

THE BELLINGHAM HERALDMarch 13, 2014

MERIDIAN TROJANS

Coach: Steve Slesk

Last year: Finished eighth in the Northwest Conference with a 5-7 record. ... Ended season after going 0-1 in the Class 1A State Tournament and finished 14-11 overall.

Players to watch: Davis Phillips (sr., C/P); Jake Plagerman (sr., SS/2B/P); Tanner Tutterrow (jr., SS/P)

Outlook: Meridian coach Steve Slesk said his club still has a long way to go to get to the point where he'd like to see his club, and the Trojans are tasked this spring with replacing a number of talents. "We'll have to prove ourselves, and we got some new kids in some new spots," Slesk said. "Overall, I like how we're working. It's early, we're learning a lot and getting a lot of good reps in." Slesk also raved about his senior leadership, and that starts with returners Davis Phillips and Jake Plagerman, who each figure to play key roles. The Trojans have a deep pitching pool to select from, but Slesk said Meridian doesn't have a true go-to pitcher or a dominant ace. He said the rotation will be sorted out throughout the early season. Phillips, senior Josh Hosick and Tanner Tutterrow should be a few key hitters the Trojans rely on to produce runs. "There is nothing set in stone," Slesk said. "It's still prove-yourself time, and we got a good amount of kids for spots."
