Lynden Christian Lyncs prep baseball capsule

LYNDEN CHRISTIAN LYNCS

Coach: Desi Luna

Last year: Finished 12th in the Northwest Conference with a 2-10 record. ... Ended season after going 1-2 in the Class 1A Northwest District Tournament and finished 8-14 overall.

Players to watch: Jamie Heystek (sr., INF); Austin Vander Haak (sr., INF); Alex Vander Velden (jr., OF); Josh Hornstra (sr., C); Josh Heutink (jr., OF); Jake Poag (so., INF)

Outlook: For the first time in a handful of years Lynden Christian coach Desi Luna has a wealth of experience to work with. The Lyncs return a chunk of last year's roster, and Luna believes LC's experience should make the club a strong defensive group. "I'm happy with what we got going so far," Luna said. "They are fairly old this year for the first time in a while." Highlighting the experienced team is senior shortstop Jamie Heystek, who Luna said might be forced into a small pitching role. Other quality returners include senior infielder Austin Vander Haak, senior catcher Josh Hornstra and junior outfielders Alex Vander Velden and Josh Heutink. Arguably LC's largest question mark is its pitching rotation. The Lyncs are still mulling their options, but Luna expects both Vander Haak and newcomer Jordan Jansen to log innings. "One of our weaknesses could be pitching," Luna said. "We lost our guys from last year, and we need a couple kids to step up." Heystek, Vander Haak, Heutink and sophomore Jake Poag are expected to be some of LC's top run producers.
