Ferndale Golden Eagles prep baseball preview capsule

THE BELLINGHAM HERALDMarch 13, 2014

FERNDALE GOLDEN EAGLES

Coach: Donny Hennigs

Last year: Finished tied for second in the Northwest Conference with a 9-3 record. ... Ended season after going 0-1 in the Class 3A State Tournament and finished 16-8 overall.

Players to watch: Brady Bauthues (sr., P/OF); Pete Pennylegion (sr., P/INF); Joey Akers (sr., OF/P); Brady Shearer (jr., C)

Outlook: The Golden Eagles bring back a solid core of players who've logged some good varsity innings, and that starts with seniors Brady Bauthues, Pete Pennylegion and Joey Akers. Bauthues and Akers threw the majority of Ferndale's innings last spring and are expected to solidify the Golden Eagles' starting rotation once again. Junior catcher Brady Shearer gives Ferndale a reliable defender behind the plate, and Pennylegion is a talented shortstop. "Defensively, we are pretty strong up the middle," Hennigs said." With Akers in centerfield, Pennylegion at shortstop and Shearer at catcher. We have looked good this last week." Ferndale has a large void to fill with the loss of third baseman Austyn Sprague, and Hennigs hopes junior Kyler Brudwick, who played left field last year, can take over the hot corner to help shore up the Golden Eagles' infield. Senior first baseman Colin Wagner gives Ferndale a strong bat and should be another key piece to the Golden Eagles' success.
