Woman hit by wheel of Whatcom County truck improving at hospital

A pedestrian who was struck by a wheel that came off a Whatcom County service truck was in satisfactory condition Wednesday, March 12, at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.

Kathlene Ruth, 52, was walking on Birch Bay Lynden Road around 5 p.m. March 4 when the driver's side outside wheel came off a passing Whatcom County truck and hit her. The Ford F-350 dually had been in use much of the day, according to Washington State Patrol, which is investigating the incident.

Ruth was seriously injured, with multiple fractures in her pelvis, femur and tibia, WSP Trooper Mark Francis said.

The truck had some maintenance done on it two weeks prior to the accident, but Francis could not give details on the nature of the maintenance.

Troopers expect the investigation to take about a month.
