BELLINGHAM - Western Washington University student Lizzi Jackson was crowned Miss Whatcom County 2014.

Jackson, 22, won against six other contestants at Whatcom Community College Saturday, March 8.

"I was shocked," Jackson said of winning the title. "It was just a feeling of numbness and then just overwhelming joy."

She got more than $2,000 in scholarships as part of her win, said Carol Starcher, pagaent executive director.

Jackson, originally from Olympia, studies marketing and management and will graduate in June.

This year she will promote Compass 2 Campus, a WWU program that pairs grade school students with mentors to increase access to higher education for underrepresented groups. Jackson said she hopes to work with Director Cyndie Shepard to expand the program to other universities and get mentors into more schools.

Jackson will compete in the Miss Washington contest in Renton in July.
