Flashing beacons installed near two Bellingham middle schools

THE BELLINGHAM HERALDMarch 4, 2014

BELLINGHAM - Newly installed flashing beacons around Kulshan and Whatcom middle schools will remind drivers of school zones, along with enhanced police patrols, according to the city of Bellingham.

The beacons have been placed along Lakeway Drive near Kenoyer Street and along F Street between Girard and Irving streets to remind drivers of the 20 mph speed limit before and after school.

The areas were chosen because they've had multiple crashes and elevated average speeds. School-zone safety is one of the police department's traffic enforcement priorities, and extra patrols will continue through the school year along Lakeway Drive and F Street.

The Washington Traffic Safety Commission funded the project, and Bellingham Public Works traffic crews installed the beacons.
