WWU's Drake, Hirst are athletes of the week


Two Western Washington University javelin throwers, Bethany Drake and Slater Hirst, have been named Red Lion/Great Northwest Athletic Conference Track and Field Female and Male Field Athletes of the Week, respectively, for Feb. 22-March 1.

Drake, a sophomore from Sandy, Ore., had a NCAA Division II automatic qualifying throw of 156-11; and Hirst, a junior from Shoreline, had a provisional qualifying effort of 194-7. Both were winning performances at the University of Puget Sound Quadrangular.

Drake, who has a career-best mark of 157-4, won the event at UPS by almost 40 feet.
