It’s all set in stone now.

The four Whatcom County basketball teams going to the 2014 Hardwood Classic State Basketball Tournament — the Lynden boys, Lynden Christian girls, Lynden girls and Blaine girls — received their respective matchups for the opening round that begins Thursday, March 6, at the SunDome in Yakima.

The Lynden girls, who have won nine consecutive games dating back to the regular season, will take the court first against Port Angeles at 10:30 a.m. Thursday. The Lions advanced to the final eight teams in the 2A after defeating Olympic 63-47 in the regional round of state on Saturday, March 1.

Lynden Christian will face Granger next at 5:30 p.m. in the 1A bracket. The Lyncs had little trouble advancing the state championships for the 11th consecutive year after going undefeated in the Northwest Conference and claiming both district and tri-district titles along the way. They defeated Freeman 56-42 in the regional round of state on Saturday to earn their berth into the Hardwood Classic.

Blaine will take the floor after them at 9 p.m. against Mabton, the team that upset the No. 2-ranked team in the 1A, Brewster, in the regional round of state. Like Mabton, the Borderites had to stage an upset to earn their berth into the 1A state tournament, handing previously-unbeaten Woodland its first loss of the season after a 39-36 victory.

Blaine and Lynden Christian are on opposite ends of the bracket, and they would only face one another if the two were to make it to the championship game.

The Lynden boys, who earned their bid after handing Sumner a 56-35 loss in the regional round of state, will face Hockinson in their opening-round matchup in the 2A bracket. Both the girls’ and boys’ Lynden teams earned district championships and have yet to lose in the postseason.

The second-round games will be played on Friday, March 7, at various times given the outcome of each team’s first game.
