MOUNTAINEERING: Noted area climber Fred Beckey speaks

March 2, 2014

Famed climber Fred Beckey will be the featured speaker at a program Saturday at University of Washington Tacoma.

Now 91 years old, Beckey is credited with making hundreds of first ascents, more than any other North American climber. A number of those first ascents were on peaks of the North Cascades, including Mount Despair and Forbidden Peak.

Following his presentation, there will be a book signing by Beckey. All three volumes of his “Cascade Alpine Guides” series by Mountaineers Books, as well as “Fred Beckey’s 100 Favorite North American Climbs” by Patagonia Books will be available for sale.

Admission for the event is $10. Tickets are available through, or at Edgeworks Climbing in Tacoma.

The program will start at 7 p.m. and will be held in William W. Philip Hall, 1918 Pacific Ave., Tacoma.
