New Hannegan farm and garden store focused on sustainable living

A farm and garden store has returned to Hinotes Corner.

John and Leah York opened Sustainable Living Farm & Garden on Monday, Feb. 17, at 6931 Hannegan Road, in the former Hannegan Farm & Home building.

The new store will have some similarities to the old, selling items for urban farmers and new homesteaders, John York said. That includes chickens, a garden center, beekeeping supplies, beer home-brewing kits, cheese-making products and equipment for canning and food dehydration.

The store also will hold classes, with the focus on teaching people about living sustainably while creating and maintaining their own stable food system.

One difference is that the new store will have more of a horticulture focus, an area where the Yorks have an extensive background. John York also has experience in business management, having previously managed Northern Lights Gardening.

Although the store has been open less than two weeks, York said they've already had a lot of local people drop in, happy to see a similar business occupy the building.

Before opening the business, the Yorks talked to the previous owner about why that business closed in November. It turned out the business had a good following, but the owner, Matthew Aamot, had trouble filling all the inventory orders needed to stock this type of store. That's an issue they plan to avoid, York said.

One focus of the store is local, organic products. This week the store is expected to carry product from Bellingham's Scratch & Peck Feeds, which offers certified organic and non-genetically modified feed for poultry. The store also offers feed from Skagit County's Conway Feeds.

"Whatcom County is great. It's becoming a hub for organic products," York said.

Later this spring the Yorks plan to have two greenhouses in place, providing demonstrations on growing different plants. They also plan to bring in a variety of tropical flowers not seen in this area, for customers interested in growing them indoors or in a greenhouse.

The store is open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, closed Sunday. Details can be found on its Facebook page or by calling 360-366-8170.

-- Last week I wrote about Chipotle Mexican Grill filing a building permit to put in a restaurant in a portion of the former movie theater at Bellis Fair. After going to press I did hear back from a Chipotle spokeswoman who said the plan is to have the restaurant open sometime in the third quarter of 2014.

-- The clothing and shoe store Journeys will be opening in a new spot at Bellis Fair, a couple of doors down from its current space, next to Bath & Body Works.

-- A state liquor license application was filed to sell beer/wine at 6000 Portal Way, under the business name Portal Way Station. Applicants are Rajvinder and Lakhwinder Malhi.

-- Skagit State Bank has filed a tenant improvement building application to do some remodeling of the space at 120 E. Holly St. to put in a new branch office. It's in the former Union Bank space, next to Starbucks.

-- Building permits were approved for Hilton to build a previously announced 106-unit, four-story extended stay hotel at 805 Home Lane, near the new Marriott SpringHill Suites on Northwest Avenue.

-- Bellingham's Jalapenos Mexican Restaurant is doing a different take on wine dinners, offering its first tequila dinner on Thursday, March 6, at its Barkley Village location. A representative from Manana Tequila will explain the use of tequila through the different courses. For more information, check out the company's Facebook page.
