Orca men fall in first round of NWAACC

THE BELLINGHAM HERALDMarch 1, 2014

The Whatcom Community College men's basketball team failed to live up to its No. 1 seed and fell to Spokane 69-61 in the first round of the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges tournament at the Toyota Center in Kennewick. The best the Orcas can finish now is seventh place and are one loss away from being eliminated.

WCC finished the regular season in first place in the North Region, earning its No. 1 seed with an 11-3 regional record and 18-7 overall record.

The Orcas couldn't keep Jack Nygaard from draining the 3-ball, as 21 of his 23 points came from beyond the arc.

Kyle Impero scored 19 points and hauled in eight rebounds, but a poor shooting performance from the Orcas doomed them. They shot only 31 percent from the field and 65 percent from the free-throw line.

The Orcas unsuccessful shots countered their 45-39 rebounding advantage and the low amount of turnovers (7).

WCC now plays the Clackamas Cougars in the consolation bracket on Sunday, March 2, in Kennewick.
