Alger-area park and ride opens March 3

ALGER - A park and ride off Lake Samish Road for the bus route between Mount Vernon and Bellingham will open Monday, March 3.

The Alger Park and Ride has 54 free parking stalls with lights, security cameras, bike racks and a bus shelter. The only bus route that will use the lot is the 80X, which runs from the Skagit Transit Station in Mount Vernon to the Bellingham Station on Railroad Avenue. The park and ride also will be used by van and car pools.

The $1.2 million lot east of Interstate 5 at exit 240 was funded by a 2011 state grant to Skagit Transit, said Dennis Digges, Skagit Transit planner. The project was finished about $100,000 under budget.

It took almost two years to go through the permit processes before construction began in May 2013, Digges said.

The 80X operated jointly by Whatcom Transportation Authority and Skagit Transit served more than 92,000 riders in 2013, said the WTA's Maureen McCarthy.
