Luke Jordan only 2A Whatcom County wrestler alive after day one

Squalicum's Luke Jordan takes down Chehalis' Reggie Eklund with a trip on the first day of the 2014 Mat Classic Washington State Wrestling Championships on Friday Feb. 21, 2014 in Tacoma. Jordan won.

TACOMA - Squalicum's Luke Jordan will be a lonely Whatcom County Class 2A wrestler during the medal rounds on Saturday, Feb. 22, at the Tacoma Dome.

Why? Because he's the only 2A county wrestler left.

Ten 2A wrestlers entered Mat Classic XXVI - three from Bellingham, three from Sehome, three from Squalicum and one from Lynden.

At least Jordan will still be vying for a state title.

"It feels great," Jordan said, with blood stained to his teeth and smeared across his bottom lip. "I'm really chasing that state title, but placing after just two matches is great."

Jordan gained momentum with a tournament title at last weekend's regional tournament, and he carried it over to the Mat Classic.

After scoring a 7-0 decision over WF West's Reggie Eklund in the opening round, Jordan earned a 7-6 quarterfinal win in the final seconds over Olympic's Isaiah Rodenhurst to advance to the 120-pound semifinals on Saturday.

Jordan led the majority of the match, but Rodenhurst tied it at 6-all after a two-point takedown with 25 seconds remaining. Without hesitation, Jordan battled back and scored an escape with 10 seconds to go before holding on for dear life to secure the win.

"Last year I lost in overtime in the quarters," Jordan said. "That was rough, and then I lost in my next match. I really wanted to be on that podium and make myself proud as well as everyone else."

Jordan was a state participant in both 2012 and 2013 but left Tacoma without hardware. That won't be the case this time.

The Storm senior said his attitude change the third time around has made a tremendous difference between his first two years.

"Be a smart wrestler but be attacking and wrestle to win, not wrestle to lose," said Jordan when asked what he'll need to do to advance to the state-final match. "That's what I've done the last two years. This year I've finally said, 'Wrestle to win.' ... One more day of wrestling, so I got to make it worth it."

Bellingham's Riley Takemura (120), Sergio Torres (126) and Blair Bennett (170) each had their quest to medal end in heartbreak.

The trio won their second matches after losing their first, but each of them dropped their final match and were eliminated. Sehome's Jose Ramirez (145) and Squalicum's Zachary Wallace (138) posted 1-2 records.

Lynden's Brody Weinheimer (182), Sehome's Briley Funk (285), Steven Yazzie (132) and Squalicum's Spencer Wallace (120) went two-and-out.
