Blaine secures state berth with win over Eatonville

The Blaine girls' basketball team earned a 60-44 win over Eatonville on Thursday, Feb. 20, clinching fifth place at the Class 1A Tri-District tournament and securing its berth into the state tournament's regional round.

The trio of Alexis McElwain, Taylor V'Dovec and Mandy Hayes combined for 57 of the Borderites' 60 points, with McElwain leading the way with 22. Both she and V'Dovec led the team with 10 rebounds, as well.

"We drive and they would sink in and we would get it to her," Blaine coach Ryan Pike said in a phone interview. "She was just determined tonight to win. It's her senior year."

Entering the game, Pike and his team recognized that they had an advantage down in the paint with their size. Turns out they were right, as the 5-foot-11 V'Dovec also scored most of her 20 points in the post.

"We had the advantage on the inside, and we tried to exploit that," he said. "They capitalized on their shots."

The Borderites took a 29-15 lead into the break thanks in large part to the defense of senior captain Olivia Olason. Olason drew the assignment of guarding the Cruisers' top scorer, KK Voss, and while she scored a team-high 22 points, much of that wasn't until the fourth quarter when the game was well out of hand.

"We wanted to have a hand up in Voss' face," Pike said. "It was a great team defensive effort."

Blaine cruised on offense after the break, posting 23 points in the third to distance itself from Eatonville.

"We held them to one shot, got a rebound and would push the ball," Pike said. "We got some easy layins."
