A mix-up at the Class 1A/2A/3A Northwest District meet Saturday, Feb. 15, at Mount Si has resulted in the shuffling of the state qualifiers.
Unfortunately for one member of the Bellingham District team, it means she won't get a chance to compete at the state championships on Friday, Feb. 21, at the Tacoma Dome Exhibition Hall. Another Bellingham gymnast will no longer be competing in the all-around and a third member of the team will not be competing on one of the three apparatus she originally was told she qualified on.
Coach Doriane Gunnels said in an email that she was notified 24 hours after the competition that one too many gymnasts had been announced as all-around qualifiers out of the district. The odd gymnast out was Squalicum's Madi Krussow.
After finishing in the top 13 on all four apparatus, Krussow will still head to state and compete in all four, but she will not compete in the all-around competition.
With Krussow no longer counting as an all-around individual, it meant one less qualifying spot in each of the four individual disciplines - vault, uneven bars, balance beam and floor exercise. Unfortunately, that bumped Sehome's Catalina Gibbons out of floor exercise and fellow Mariner Catalina Fitzpatrick out of vault.
Gibbons will still compete at state on the bars and beam, but vault was the only event Fitzpatrick had qualified in.
Krussow and Gibbons will be joined at state by Bellingham's Ariel McGavock on the floor and Squalicum's Sienna Takabe on the beam.
Competition is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. on Friday, with the awards scheduled for 4:50 p.m.
