Sehome, Squalicum earn several wild-card berths

THE BELLINGHAM HERALDFebruary 18, 2014

Sehome's lineup at the Class 2A State Swimming Championships just got a big larger.

Trevor Nims, Patrick Lisosky and Trent Olson all qualified for two wild-card spots apiece for the state swimming championships beginning at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 22, at the King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way.

Nims earned berths into the 200 freestyle and 500 freestyle events after posting state-qualifying times at the district finals. Likewise, Olson's performances in the 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle lifted him into the final 24, and Lisosky will be competing in the 200 individual medley and 100 breaststroke. The Mariners' Joseph Adams, after swimming a time of 1 minute, 8.10 seconds in the 100 breaststroke, also earned a wild-card bid to state.

Squalicum, like Sehome, will be well represented once state rolls around.

Neall Koetje, Andi DeKoster and Jonathan Hegeberg all earned multiple wild-card berths after posting state-qualifying times at districts.

Hegeberg's times of 5:29.03 in the 500 freestyle and 1:09.30 in the 100 breaststroke both were top-16 times in those respective events. Koetje will be competing in the 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle as a wild card, and DeKoster will be swimming in the 200 freestyle and 500 freestyle events. Hans Kogan will join Koetje in the 50 freestyle after posting a time of 23.33.

Nathan Kamkoff was the highest seeded wild card from the Storm, posting the 11th fastest time in the state in the 100 breaststroke (1:07.91). Gabe Kamkoff, a freshman at Squalicum, earned one of the final spots in the state diving competition.

Two relays teams for Bellingham - the 200 freestyle and 400 freestyle teams - earned state berths as wild cards. Logan Dozal (200 individual medley), Brisen Pearson (50 freestyle) and Trip Jackson (diving) also earned wild-card entries for the Red Raiders.

Rounding out the state qualifiers from Whatcom County are a pair of Lynden relays (the 200 medley and 200 freestyle teams) and the Lions' Michael Johnson (100 backstroke) and Grant Williams (500 freestyle).
