Catelli, Pinley win events at UW Indoor Open


Western Washington University's Frank Catelli won the men's shot put with a mark of 57-5 1/2 on Sunday, Feb. 16, at the University of Washington Indoor Open held at Dempsey Indoor on the UW campus.

Catelli bettered his school record and improved his NCAA Division II provisional national qualifying effort of four weeks ago by nearly two feet.

Teammate Jacob Gilbert placed fifth in the shot put with a provisional qualifying mark of 51-6 1/4.

Another event winner for the Vikings was Cheyenna Pinley in the women's pole vault. She cleared 12-6, bettering her previous provisional qualifying effort by six inches.

In the men's pole vault, WWU's Gordie Kordas finished second with a mark of 14-5 1/4.

WWU competes in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Championships this Friday and Saturday at Nampa, Id. The Viking men are the defending champions.
