Stars step up in fourth in Blaine win over Nooksack

THE BELLINGHAM HERALDFebruary 15, 2014

Blaine's girls' basketball team secured a No. 3 seed in the Class 1A Tri-District Tournament by beating Nooksack Valley 49-37 in a Class 1A Northwest District third-place game on Saturday, Feb. 15, at Mountlake Terrace High School.

The Pioneers had the lead going into the fourth quarter, but a 21-point outburst by the Borderites turned the tide.

"We pressed, got some easy buckets off turnovers and started making our shots," Blaine coach Ryan Pike said in a phone interview.

Blaine out-rebounded and forced more turnovers than Nooksack - both were key to the victories.

"The more shots you get, the more points you'll typically have," Pike said.

Taylor V'Dovec led the Borderites with 17 points and 15 rebounds. Mandy Hayes also added 16 points, including 10 in the fourth quarter and Alexis McElwain had 10 points and 9 rebounds.

"There were some big things that happened in the fourth," Pike said. "Those three really stepped up."

The Pioneers, who will enter tri-districts as the No. 4 seed, were led by Brianna Turner's 11 points and Lindsay Hayes' 10 points.
