WWU women wins fourth straight

Center Sarah Hill led a balanced attack with 13 points, nine rebounds, five assists and three blocks, lifting Western Washington University to a 63-55 triumph over Western Oregon University in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's basketball game Saturday at Sam Carver Gymnasium on the WWU campus.

Tia Briggs came off the score 12 points and forward Sydney Donaldson added 11 for the Vikings, who improved to 15-8 overall and 11-4 in the GNAC with their fourth straight victory.

Melissa Fowler had a game-high 16 points on 8-of-12 field-goal shooting for Western Oregon, which fell to 6-16 overall and 3-11 in the GNAC with its eighth loss in nine games. Dana Goularte and Chantel Divilbiss each had 12 points for the Wolves, with Divilbiss scoring all of her points in the last 11 minutes.

The Vikings led all but the first 13 seconds of the contest, jumping to a 10-4 lead after five minutes with Donaldson scoring eight of the points. WWU led by as much as 12 in the opening half and held a 29-20 lead at halftime.

WWU then opened the second half with a 9-2 charge in the first three minutes to open up a 38-22 advantage, and led by as much as 22 in the second half. The Wolves, who shot 56.0 percent (14 of 25) from the field in the second half, rallied, using a run of eight straight points to close the margin to 11, 59-48, with 4:43 to go, and eventually pulled within eight, 63-55, on a Divilbiss 3-pointer with 37.3 seconds left, but got no closer.

It was WWU's 23rd consecutive victory over WOU, and the Vikings hold a 44-9 all-time advantage in the series.

WWU travels to Alaska to meet Alaska Fairbanks on Thursday and Alaska Anchorage on Saturday in GNAC counters.
