Ferndale's boys' wrestling team wanted to have everyone who qualified for regionals to make it to state. And that's exactly what the Golden Eagles did. The Golden Eagles had 11 wrestlers qualify for state as they won the regional as a team, beating out Everett, which took second place, and Oak Harbor, which took third.
"Last week, we came out attacking and kept that going through today," Ferndale coach Caleb Schlack said in a phone interview. "Many people had to wrestle the same guys they wrestled last week in close matches. That's tough and they did well."
Brock Graves (106-pound), Devon Bennett (120), Klinton Maassen (182), Chris Hernandez (285) all won their weight classes.
Ben Broselle (145) and Patrick Condon (220) took second. Isaiah Heredia (113), Adaeus Wilson-Premo (126), Taylor Bellefuille (160) and Hunter Grunherd (195) took third. Charnjit Mattu (170) took fourth.
The top four in each weight class qualified for state.
"It'll be nice going into state," Schlack said. "The confidence will just keep going. They're not going to hold back and they're not going to wrestled scared. If they can wrestle good, they can go with anyone. The confidence will go a long way at state."
The Mat Classic begins on Friday, Feb. 21, at the Tacoma Dome.
