Five gymnasts make it to state

The Whatcom County gymnastics teams had a theme this year. They even put it on T-shirts and wore them to the district meet on Saturday, Feb. 15.

The T-shirts read: "Good, better, best. Never let it rest. Until your good is better and your better is best."

"It just shows they're looking to improve themselves everyday and that's exactly what they did today," coach Dorianne Gunnels said in a phone interview.

Five girls qualified for state, which will be held on Friday, Feb. 21, and Saturday, Feb. 22. The gymnasts include Squalicum's Madi Krussow in the all-around, Sehome's Catalina Fitzpatrick in the vault and Catalina Gibbons in bars, balance beam, and floor, and Bellingham's Ariel McGavock in floor.

"Some girls are making it for the first time and I'm super excited for them," Gunnels said. "Others worked their butts off and am glad to see their making it. I'm glad they all get to do this. Five girls going is exciting. I couldn't be prouder. They're good kids, strong athletes and will be a lot of fun to take to state."

The state tournament will be held at the Tacoma Dome exhibition hall.
