Red Raiders hold off Cedarcrest to advance

Bellingham's girls' basketball team played like a team that could make an extended run in the postseason while defeating Cedarcrest 65-63 in a 2A Bi-District Tournament game on Friday, Feb. 14, at Cedarcrest High School. Bellingham was led by Alyssa Porter (25 points) and Joelle Zamora (18), who combined for 43 of the team's 65 points.

"It was our best performance of the season in a lot of ways," Bellingham coach Ed Wissing said in a phone interview. "We shot well, moved the ball well and we were aggressive but patient. We saw what we can be capable of."

The Red Raiders went into the half ahead 41-25 and held a 16-point lead into the fourth quarter, but Cedarcrest almost came back and won it.

"I think we got a little tentative," Wissing said. "The lead kept getting smaller and smaller, but they didn't panic. We just played smart and didn't beat ourselves down the stretch."

Bellingham is hoping to harness some of the magic its girls' soccer team generated in the fall with a run to the championship. They even brought in the coach from that miracle run, Mark Wright, to talk about the experience.

"We hope it's a springboard for us," Wissing said. "Sometimes you can have emotional wins like this one and then get deflated. The challenge will be to muster the same energy and determination we had tonight. If we can do that, we can compete with anyone."

Bellingham will get back to action on Monday, Feb. 17, against Burlington-Edison in the bi-district semifinals.
