Free throw shooting sinks Meridian girls

THE BELLINGHAM HERALDFebruary 13, 2014

The Meridian girls' basketball team couldn't make its free throws and ended up just two points short of surviving in the Class 1A Northwest District Tournament with a 42-41 loss to Coupeville on Thursday, Feb. 13, at Coupeville.

The Trojans were led by Ryley Zapien's 16 points, but shot just 7 for 23 from the charity stripe as a team.

"We did the things we thought we needed to do, but it came down to putting the ball in the hole on foul shots," Meridian coach Mark Gilmore said in a phone interview. "The girls played great defense and outrebounded them though."

Meridian also got 10 points from Sydney Swanson before she fouled out.

The Trojans also lose six seniors off of this squad. Taylor Lunde finished with three points and a team-high nine rebounds in her final game. Grace Pyles, Haley Belanger, Kendra Holmes, Allie Mack and Allecia Gallindo also played their final game.

"We had a really balanced attack and effort. All the girls had great energy," Gilmore said.
