94-year-old in critical condition after being hit by car in Ferndale

FERNDALE - A 94-year-old man who was hit by a car as he was crossing the street Wednesday, Feb. 12, was in critical condition in a Seattle hospital Thursday, according to the Ferndale Police Department.

Askari Shafa was crossing at the intersection of Vista Drive and 4th Street at about 11:30 a.m. when he was struck by a car driven by an 84-year-old woman, Lt. Matt Huffman said.

The woman was driving south on Vista when she hit him. She told officers that she didn't see the man as she was driving in the sun and the area was in shadow. Washington State Patrol is assisting in the investigation.

Shafa was being treated at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.
