Almost 500 runners participated in the 44th annual Birch Bay Marathon on Feb. 19, 2012 in Birch Bay. Joseph Gray of Lakewood set a course record in the half-marathon, finishing in 1 hour, 9 minutes and 41 seconds.

The 46th Annual Birch Bay International Marathon and half marathon is scheduled for 9 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 16.

The generally flat course mostly lines the waterfront and offers expansive views of Birch Bay and Drayton Harbor and even some mountains in the distance on a clear day.

The marathon is annually one of the final opportunities for runners to qualify for the Boston Marathon.

Chuck Engle from Coos Bay, Ore., was the top finisher in the marathon last year in two hours, 46 minutes, three seconds, while Pasco's Miranda Bachman was the top women's runner in 3:44:37. Bellingham's Peter Ellis won the half marathon in 1:13:27, while Seattle's Milah Frownfelter was the top women's finisher in 1:27:58.

PIANIST JONATHAN BLISS AT WWU

American pianist Jonathan Biss, born in 1980, has won international recognition for his orchestral, recital, and chamber music performances and for his award-winning recordings. He performs works by Beethoven, Chopin and Brahms at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 14, at Western Washington University Performing Arts Center Concert Hall.

TINGSTAD AND RUMBEL AT MOUNT VERNON

Grammy Award-winning multi-instrumentalists Eric Tingstad and Nancy Rumbel, who've performed, recorded and toured together for more than 24 years with 19 albums to their credit, present a special Valentine's show at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 14, at the Lincoln Theatre, 712 S. First St., in Mount Vernon.

Reserved seating tickets are $25, $22, $20 and $18, plus applicable fees. Lincoln Theatre members receive a $2 discount;

The Lincoln Theatre offers a special pre-sale add-on champagne and chocolate package.
