Lynden falls one spot in 2A polls

THE BELLINGHAM HERALDFebruary 12, 2014

A simple fact has remained the same throughout the entire boys' basketball season: Lynden has been the top ranked Whatcom County team in the Associated Press' weekly rankings.

And with the regular season coming to an end, the voters saw no reason to break from that reality.

The Lions, boasting a 16-3 regular-season record, came in as the No. 3-ranked Class 2A team in the Associated Press' weekly polls released Wednesday, Feb. 12.

Lynden fell one spot from last week, with Pullman jumping up to No. 2.

The Lions have won five of their past six games, with their only loss in that stretch coming in triple overtime to Sedro-Woolley on Tuesday, Feb. 11. With a 9-3 record in the Northwest Conference, Lynden enters the Class 2A Bi-District Tournament the No. 3 seed from the NWC, and it will travel to Archbishop Murphy on Saturday, Feb. 15, for its opening-round game.

Lynden Christian (15-6, NWC 9-3) fell one spot from No. 7 to No. 8 in the Class 1A rankings. The Lyncs, who at one point won nine of their first 10 conference games, fell to Squalicum and Sehome to end their regular season. Despite the late-season losses, Lynden Christian still sits as the No. 1-seed in the Class 1A Northwest District Tournament.

Lummi, which came in as the No. 5-ranked Class 1B team, is the only other ranked boys' basketball team from Whatcom County. Sehome, which won its final four games in the regular season, made the Class 2A Bi-District Tournament as the No. 4 seed, and the Mariners garnered some recognition in the polls, receiving a single vote but not cracking the top 10.

On the girls' side, Lynden Christian continues to set the precedent for Whatcom County schools.

The Lyncs moved up from No. 5 to No. 4 in the Class 1A poll after finishing off the regular season a perfect 12-0 in conference. The Lyncs, led by Kara Bajema and her 12.9 points per game, defeated Meridian in their Class 1A Northwest District opener, and move on to face Mount Baker at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 13, at Lynden Christian in the semifinals.

Blaine, which also won its Class 1A Northwest District opener, moved up from No. 10 to No. 9 in the Class 1A poll. The Borderites travel to King's in semifinal action on Thursday.

Rainier Beach (Class 3A) was the lone boys' team to be a unanimous No. 1 selection. Cleveland (3A), Mark Morris (2A) and Cashmere (1A) were all unanimous selections on the girls' side.
