94-year-old man struck by car in Ferndale intersection

FERNDALE - A 94-year-old Bellingham man was rushed to the hospital after he was hit by a car as he was crossing the street Wednesday, Feb. 12, according to the Ferndale Police Department.

The man was crossing at the intersection of Vista Drive and 4th Street at about 11:30 a.m. when he was struck by a car driven by an 84-year-old woman, Lt. Matt Huffman said.

The man's name was not released Wednesday, and no information was available on his condition.

The woman was driving south on Vista when she hit him, and she told officers that she didn't see the man as she was driving in the sun and the area was in shadow. Based on her statement and witness statements, Huffman said it doesn't appear that speed, drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash. It doesn't look like there will be any criminal charges, though she could be cited for failure to yield to a pedestrian.

The woman was shaken up but not injured, Huffman said.
