Baker girls rally in second half to win in first round

Mount Baker's girls' basketball team used a strong third quarter to get by Coupeville 56-46 in the first round of the Class 1A Northwest District Tournament on Tuesday, Feb. 11, at Mount Baker High School.

The key to the second half was to play good defense against Coupeville's Makena Stone, who had 18 points on the night, Baker coach Brenda Ellis said in a phone interview.

"She was hitting everything from the floor. That was our job and we needed to stop her," Ellis said. "It was one of those things that we were going to step up defensively and we held them to four points in the third quarter."

The Mountaineers were led by Emily Brandland's 20 points and six rebounds.

Mount Baker moves on to play Lynden Christian on Thursday, Feb. 13.
