Baker falls to King's in first round

Mount Baker's boys' basketball team hit a cold streak shooting in the fourth quarter and lost to King's 62-38 in the first round of the Class 1A Northwest District Tournament on Monday, Feb. 10, at King's High School. The Mountaineers were led by Reuben Murashov's 14 points.

"In the fourth we couldn't buy a basket. Our points came on three free throws," Mount Baker coach Rob Gray said in a phone interview.

Turnovers also hurt Mount Baker in the loss, as it had 29 to the Knights' 14.

"Our turnovers led to easy baskets for them," Gray said.

Corey Kispert led King's with 15 points. His brother, Calvin Kispert, was held to just six points by the stiff defense of Mount Baker's Andrew Zender, Gray said.

Zender finished with five points and a game-high eight rebounds. Isaac Gilmore and Conner Brandland each had six points for the Mountaineers. T.J. Bass added another five points.

"T.J. Bass played well for us. Those were his first significant varsity minutes," Gray said.

Mount Baker takes on Blaine, which lost to Friday Harbor, in the consolation bracket. After two previous meetings, the Mountaineers feel pretty familiar with the Borderites.

"It's going to be a really tough, hard-fought battle," Gray said. "In our two previous meetings we lost by one and two. It's going to be tough to go up there and get the win."

The clash of Northwest Conference rivals is scheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 12, at Blaine.
