Ferndale's boys' wrestling team rolled through the Class 3A Sub-Regional Wrestling Tournament on Saturday, Feb. 8. The Golden Eagles won the event with a 369.5, the next closest team was Everett at 282.
"It definitely showed that our guys wanted to win," Ferndale coach Caleb Schlack said in a phone interview.
Ferndale had a wrestler place in the top four of each weight class. The top three in each weight class advance to the regionals, a fourth-place finisher is considered an alternate for the regionals. Sixteen wrestlers were in each weight class.
"We didn't quit; we looked prepared; we capitalized on other team's mistakes," Schlack said.
Brock Graves (106), Devon Bennett (120), Klinton Maassen (182), Patrick Condon (220) and Chris Hernandez all took first place in their brackets. Ferndale's second-place finishers were Isaiah Heredia (113) and Hunter Grunherd (195).
Placing third was Adaeus Wilson-Premo (126), Ben Broselle (145), Taylor Bellefuille (160) and Charnjit Mattu (170).
The 11 wrestlers move on to compete in the 3A regional tournament on Saturday, Feb. 15, at Nathan Hale High School.
"I think we just have to keep the ball rolling," Schlack said. "We have started to learn some tricks and things that help us on the mat and we just have to keep playing smart, stick to the basics and keep rolling."
