Somers leads Lynden boys over Meridian

THE BELLINGHAM HERALDFebruary 6, 2014

Lynden's boys' basketball team did just enough to hold off Meridian 39-37 in both teams' Northwest Conference season finale Thursday, Feb. 6, at Meridian High School. Sterling Somers led the Lions with 23 points.

"We were down 12 in the third quarter and our guys did a great job of fighting back," Meridian coach Shane Stacy said in a phone interview.

Lynden outscored Meridian 10-3 in the first quarter, putting the Trojans on their heels early. Meridian turned it around in the second half, topping Lynden 27-20. Kyle Young led the Trojans' charge with 12 points.

"Kyle Young had a great performance down low," Stacy said. "When he is a threat on the low block - when he is determined to take the ball to the hoop - he can be very dangerous."

Meridian takes on South Whidbey at 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 10, at home in the Class 1A Northwest District Tournament. Lynden won't play again until the Class 2A Bi-District Tournament, at a time and date to be determined.
