Lynden's girls basketball team got off to a hot start and held on to top Meridian 49-35 in a Northwest Conference game Thursday, Feb. 6, at Lynden High School. The Lions were led by Stephanie Somers' 16 points and five assists.

"We got out and got running," Lynden coach Rob Adams said in a phone interview. "Then Meridian did a better job playing transition defense. We slowed down and started missing open shots."

Meridian was led by Ryley Zapien's 11 points. Janessa Murphy added eight points and 11 rebounds for the Trojans.

The Lions got another 14 points from Ashlyn Morgan, who also had nine rebounds.

"Ashlyn Morgan played huge," Adams said. "It was fantastic, you couldn't have asked for a better performance from a senior on senior night."
