Lynden Christian boys fall one spot from No. 6 to 7 in 1A poll

THE BELLINGHAM HERALDFebruary 5, 2014

With an exception to Lynden Christian boys' basketball, every Whatcom County team maintained its same ranking as last week in the newest edition of the Associated Press Washington State prep basketball polls released Wednesday, Feb. 5.

The Lyncs (14-5, 9-2 NWC), whose seven-game win streak was snapped by Squalicum on Tuesday, Feb. 4, dropped from No. 6 to No. 7 in the Class 1A rankings.

LC was in line to win the Northwest Conference outright before losing to the Storm. Now they could end up in a three-way tie for first if Lynden Christian, Anacortes and Lynden each win out.

The Lynden boys' basketball team (15-2, 8-2 NWC) remained ranked No. 2 in the 2A rankings, and the Lummi boys' team (15-3, 8-3) stayed at No. 5 in Class 1B.

After suffering loses to both Anacortes and Lynden Christian within the same week, the Lions have put together a four-game win streak. They end their regular season with games against Meridian and Sedro-Woolley. Lummi ended its season with a loss to Tulalip Heritage and now heads into the postseason.

On the girls' side, Lynden Christian (16-3, 11-0 NWC) remained ranked No. 5, and Blaine (13-6, 8-3) stayed put at No. 10 in Class 1A.

The Lyncs have reeled off 11 wins in a row and have locked up a NWC championship. LC finishes its regular season against Sehome before beginning the 1A District Tournament.

The Borderites have won back-to-back games since losing to Lynden 52-45 on Friday, Jan. 31, and overall Blaine has won six of its last seven.

Richland took over the top spot in the boys' Class 4A poll, Rainer Beach maintained its top spot in the 3As and Pullman stayed in front in the 2A poll, receiving all 10 first-place votes. Okanogan remained atop the 1As, St. George's was No. 1 in Class 2B and Neah Bay stayed put at No. 1 in the 1B poll.

Lynwood stayed at No. 1 in the Class 4A girls' poll, while Cleveland was unanimously ranked No. 1 in the 3A poll. Mark Morris earned all 10 first-place votes in the 2A poll, Cashmere was ranked No. 1 in the 1As, Northwest Christian (Colbert) topped 2B and Colton was the top-ranked 1B school.
