Panelists to discuss unequal pay for women during Bellingham event

BELLINGHAM - U.S. Rep. Suzan DelBene, who represents north and east Whatcom County, will be part of a panel on equal pay for women sponsored by the Bellingham branch of the American Association of University Women.

The free public event starts at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 8, at the Bellingham YWCA, 1026 N. Forest St. Other panelists are Tonna Kutner of AAUW and Shurla Thibou of the women's studies program at Western Washington University.

DelBene is appearing as Congress considers the Paycheck Fairness Act, which would bolster existing law requiring employers to pay women as much as men for the same work. The median earnings of women are 77 percent that of men, according to 2012 census data.

Those attending the panel are asked to bring written questions and stories about inequity in pay.
