Pioneers hold off charge from Sehome

THE BELLINGHAM HERALDJanuary 30, 2014

The Nooksack Valley girls' basketball team held off Sehome for a 47-45 win on Thursday, Jan. 30, at Sehome High School in a Northwest Conference matchup.

Maddy Bryan for the Mariners and Brianna Turner for the Pioneers led all scorers with 18 points. Both Lindsay Hayes and Taryn Tenkley for Nooksack had 11 points in the win.

The Mariners, who are still searching for their first win of the season, held a 21-14 halftime lead thanks in large part to a stingy defensive performance.

"We weren't giving up second-shot opportunities," Sehome coach Kim Kirk said in a phone interview. "We were really working together."

Bryan had a chance to win the game in the final seconds, but despite her strong performance, she wasn't able to sink the late basket.

"I was so pleased from my kids tonight," Kirk said. "Unfortunately it didn't fall, and that was the game. My kids played their hearts out."
