Blaine girls let up in fourth, but hang on for win

Blaine's girls' basketball team rolled for three quarters and held off a late run by Mount Baker in a 62-40 Northwest Conference win over the Mountaineers on Tuesday, Jan. 28, at Blaine High School. The Borderites were led by Taylor V'Dovec's 17 points, eight rebounds and six assists.

"We came out and pressured them right away, which caused them to turn the ball over and we got some buckets because of it," Blaine coach Ryan Pike said in a phone interview. "We had a lot of assists and deflections. The rebounding was spread pretty evenly and there were a lot of people getting lay-ins off of fast breaks. Baker is a pretty good team and we shut them down for three quarters."

The only quarter the Mountaineers scored in double digits was the fourth, when they outscored Blaine 18-8. Emily Yost and Emily Brandland led Mount Baker with 13 points each.

Alexis McElwain added 12 for the Borderites, who had 22 assists as a team.

Blaine's next game is at 7:15 p.m. Friday, Jan. 31, at Lynden. Mount Baker plays next at 7:15 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 1, when the Mountaineers host Meridian.
