Comeback falls short for Meridian girls

THE BELLINGHAM HERALDJanuary 27, 2014

Despite a second-half surge, Meridian couldn't overcome Burlington-Edison's prolific first quarter and took a 49-39 Northwest Conference loss Monday, Jan. 27. The Trojans were led by Ryley Zapien's 14 points and five assists.

The Tigers out-scored Meridian 20-4 in the first quarter, and though the Trojans won the second half 27-20, they couldn't complete the comeback.

"In the second half we took it to them defensively and started scoring. We had enough (field goal) attempts to even it up," Meridian coach Mark Gilmore said in a phone interview. "Zapien scored better in the second half. Sydney Swanson got two offensive boards and put them in in the second half. That sparked the team, our energy level picked up."

Swanson finished with four points and a team-high nine rebounds.

Meridian plays next at 7:15 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 27, at Lynden Christian.
