Sehome boys hand Bellingham a loss

THE BELLINGHAM HERALDJanuary 24, 2014

BELLINGHAM - Bellingham couldn't weather the storm that was Sehome's offense.

The Mariners shot 48.3 percent from the field (29 for 60), and 40 percent from 3-point range (8 for 20) to top the Red Raiders 79-63 on Friday, Jan. 24, at Sehome High School. With the win, Sehome moves to 5-2 in Northwest Conference play and 11-4 overall, while Bellingham falls to 2-6 in league play and 7-9 overall.

Leading the offensive outburst for the Mariners was junior guard Leif Anderson, who finished with a game-high 23 points - 17 of which came in the second quarter - and he added six rebounds, two assists and a steal in the win. Evan Miksovsky tossed in 15 points of his own, despite picking up three early fouls, and Tanner Clark added 16 points and a game-high four steals.

Kailen Hayes, who like Miksovsky got into early foul trouble and sat much of the first half, finished with a team-high 16 points for Bellingham. Tristan Hurley and Dante Check each finished with 10 points apiece.

The two teams traded baskets early on, and Sehome jumped out to a 9-6 lead after a deep 3-pointer by Anderson and a pair of baskets by Clark. Bellingham would bring the score to within one, 14-13, after Check hit all three of his free throws after Miksovsky fouled him shooting a 3-pointer with 3.1 seconds left in the opening quarter.

The second quarter featured two teams with the same mindset: Run.

Anderson started the scoring barrage off with a 3-pointer followed by a Bellingham turnover that led to a putback layup by Duncan James. The Red Raiders answered back to take a 20-19 lead - their first lead since 6-5 in the first - after a Fox layup.

Then came the show.

Anderson scored 11 of Sehome's next 15 points, giving the Mariners their biggest lead of the game at 34-23. A timeout by McKay was all he could do to stop Anderson's run, given he was lofting 3-pointers from well beyond the arc.

"People know (Anderson) as a shooter, but he's really made himself into a complete player," Sehome coach AJ LaBree said. "It wasn't just 3-poiners. He did a lot of little things."

Anderson added: "The ball came to me, and I got open shots and knocked them down. ... Repetition - the more you practice the more you're going to knock them down."

It wasn't as if Bellingham's offense was stagnant, though, as after falling down 34-23, 3-pointers by Hurley, Kieran Lewis and Hayes brought the score to within five, 39-34. But as was the case all night, Sehome managed to snuff out any Red Raider momentum as Anderson was fouled attempting a 3 and hit all of his free throws to give the Mariners a 42-34 lead going into the half.

"We just couldn't get stops," Bellingham coach Brad McKay said. "I think they got going offensively. We missed some shots, so that kind of took some of the energy out and you can't do that."

Sehome distanced itself from Bellingham in the third, jumping out to a 51-39 lead after a 3-pointer and turnaround jumper by Clark. Langston Engle also had two driving layups in the early part of the third to widen the gap.

"Bellingham would make a little run and we'd make a bigger run back," LaBree said. "They'd make one shot and get a little excited. We'd come back and get a 3 and get an offensive rebound and get a putback."

Sehome went into the fourth holding a 61-44 lead, and Bellingham was never able to bring the game closer than 16 points for the entirety of the fourth quarter.
