Body found in Nooksack River near Nugents Corner

A body found in the Nooksack River may be a man missing from Bellingham, according to the Whatcom County Sheriff's Office.

People fishing about a mile downstream from Nugents Corner reported a dead body stuck in the river around 1:15 p.m. Friday afternoon, Jan. 24.

Sheriff's deputies spent much of the afternoon coordinating how to bring the remains ashore by boat, said Sheriff Bill Elfo.

There's a homeless camp upstream. A man who sometimes stayed there had recently been reported missing out of Bellingham, Elfo said.

It's unclear how long the body had been there. An autopsy will determine the cause of death. The person's name won't be released until family has been notified.

No other details were available Friday evening.
