Squalicum girls can't complete late comeback attempt

Squalicum's girls' basketball team battled back to get within three, but couldn't overtake Burlington-Edison in a 52-45 loss Monday, Jan. 20, at Squalicum High School. The Storm were led by Meghan Lowry's 13 points and seven rebounds, both team highs for the night.

"It was pretty even at halftime, we were down five, but in the third quarter they just ran us out of the gym," Squalicum coach Mark Wright said in a phone interview. "We stayed with them though. We whittled their lead all the way down to three points in the fourth quarter."

Despite a late surge by the Storm, Burlington-Edison hit its free throws down the stretch and came away on top. The Tigers were led by Olivia Capron's 10 points and 11 rebounds.

Capron's rebounding helped Burlington-Edison to a 43-28 rebounding advantage, but Squalicum forced the Tigers into 23 turnovers to keep it close.

Squalicum only dressed seven players in the game, due to illness going around the team.

"They were angelic in their desire to get back in the game," Wright said.

Kamea Pino, Sydney Arndorfer, Shaunee Hooper and Lissette Meza each had six points for the Storm. Sarah Hulbert and Baily Molnar each added four.

"I was really happy with Kamea Pino's game, she was very confident on the floor," Wright said. "The seven that played gave it all they got."

Squalicum's next game is at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 21, at home against Nooksack Valley.
