Nooksack Valley's girls' wrestling team took second place at the 3rd Annual Lady Tiger Tournament on Saturday, Jan. 18, at Burlington-Edison High School.
Kylee Dekoekkoek led the Pioneers, taking first in the 155-pound division and earning Wrestler of the Day honors for the upper weight divisions.
"Kylee had a few really tough matches. Kelly Roberts also had her first match for us, she wrestled hard but didn't place," Nooksack Valley assistant coach Michelle Dekoekkoek said in a phone interview. "All the girls worked really hard, they're working hard in the wrestling room and its showing."
Yelm won the tournament with 146 points, followed by Nooksack Valley with 131 points. Sedro-Woolley and Lynden tied for third with 117 points.
Chloe Gardner also finished first for Nooksack Valley in the 145-pound division. Maria Cavares (100) and Fabiana Hernandez (137) were third in their respective divisions for the Pioneers.
Lynden's Gabriela Herrera took first in the 124-pound weight class, and Shannon Dee was first in the 130-pound division.
"This was Gabby's first time taking first at a tournament," Lynden coach Sally Gallegos said in a phone interview. "It was great for her and Shannon to get wins close to home their senior season."
Thalia Veliz also took second for Lynden in the 170-pound division.
Nooksack Valley's next match is on Wednesday at Mount Baker. Lynden's next match is on Wednesday at Burlington-Edison.
